GOD, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL - 28/09/2004

We’ve recently received two (presumably) independent letters expressing the controversial view that crop circles may be Satanic interventions to mislead us all. Over, then, to RICARDO GOMES and CLIVE HARMSWORTH…

For starters I believe that there are only two forces on this Earth, the forces of good and evil; you will not find anything else no matter how hard you try. Being a very strong believer in God, and the fact that he sent his only son Jesus Christ down to Earth to pay for the world’s sins, I’ve searched the scriptures of the Bible and believe everything in it. It has never been proven wrong, archaeologically as well.

Anyway back to the subject. I’ve come to the positive conclusion that crop circles are demonic and are a force of evil which the Devil himself has created to place confusion in the hearts and minds of everyone out there to believe that there is something else amongst us, which simply creates curiosity. He’s done it before and continues on to do so; e.g. he came in the shape of a serpent, which was more subtle than any beast of the field, and beguiled Eve to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This tree, by the way, was the only tree God forbade them to eat from. God said “If you eat of this tree you will surely die”, but the cunning and tricky serpent that it was said “No, you wont die at all - eat up,” and doing so they were cut off from the Lord’s goodness and garden. Now that’s just one example of many that are in the bible, of the conniving ways the Devil has for us and our curious minds. Crop circles are simply another way to deceive us.

This plan which the Devil has is to simply set everyone way off course from knowing the truth about God and the evil ways of the Devil. You will never ever find out how crop circles are formed - its all just “we think” and speculation that comes from Man and his very vain theories. I too was so curious with all of this, its just so mysterious isn’t it? Questions like how and why and what, rule people’s lives to the point that God is no longer in the picture anymore or never even was there, because people have their own theory on life and the way it all works. God is the only good force. God is not a god of confusion, there’s no big secret - you just have to pick up your bibles (old King James preferably, as it’s directly translated from the Hebrew and Greek) to find out all the answers to your questions. Don’t you worry there. Read it with purpose of heart and not like a story book; study it carefully.

Oh, and by the way, there was an experiment once performed with the magnetic field around the circles that was pumped through a sound music software [really?? – Ed] created to give the force a voice, and this force played a tune like music. This is actually interesting, you’ll find. The Devil, or Lucifer, was the best musician in heaven.

I write as a Christian who has followed the crop circle phenomenon since 1996. I would like to offer a biblical perspective.

Deuteronomy 4:19 says “Do not be tempted to worship and serve what you see in the sky – the Sun, the Moon and the Stars”. So what shall we make of crop formations such as the 2001 SETI reply, the 2002 alien face/disc and related UFO sightings, luminosities and Rod Bearcloud’s ‘Star Nation’ people? The existence of aliens is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, because aliens have no relevance to life here on Earth [though many people believe the Nephilim, “Giants” and other odd creatures/races mentioned within the Old Testament, such as in the book of Ezekiel, are veiled references to extra-terrestrial intervention – Ed]. This is not to say that life-forms do not exist in other solar systems, but in the Bible aliens are not involved in the creation, history, present, future and ultimate destiny of Mankind. Genesis 1:27 says “God created human beings, making them to be like himself”. Then, at the end of time, all creation will be made anew in Christ, where (Revelation 21:3) “God’s home is with human beings. He will live in them and they shall be his people”. According to the Christian faith, a belief in alien involvement in human affairs is false religion.

Regarding the 2012-connected formations, such as the 1997 Etchilhampton ‘calendar grid’ and the recent Silbury Mayan-type formation: 2 Corinthians 6:2 says “Today is the day to be saved.” Matthew 6:34 says “Do not worry about tomorrow, it will have enough worries of its own.” Speculation on what will happen on specific doomsday dates such as 2000 or 2012 encourages us to delay making necessary life changes now until we know what will happen in the future. However, we can never know what will happen in the future. It is true that Jesus talked about eternity, Heaven and Hell. But warnings about the eternal consequences of our actions focus our attention on the importance of making changes now, today, in the present. 2012 diverts our attention away from the opportunity of reconciliation with God by the sacrificial, atoning death of Jesus. Matthew 6:33: “Be concerned above everything else with the Kingdom of God”. John 14:6: “I am the way, the truth and the life, no-one goes to the Father except by me”. Conjecture on 2012 does not lead us to Jesus, so must be leading us away from the truth.

Consider the following biblical quotes on the powers of darkness: Matthew 24:24: “False messiahs and false prophets will appear. They will perform great miracles and wonders in order to deceive even God’s chosen people”. Ephesians 6:12: “For we are not fighting against human beings, but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world, the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers of this dark age”. In 2 Corinthians 11: “Even Satan can disguise himself to look like an angel of light”. So, the existence of luminosities and the Cambridgeshire ‘angel’ formation of 2001 do not prove crop circles are from the Light. Think carefully about what we may be dealing with here. Crop Circles are NOT man-made. Phenomena originating from the spiritual realm should be treated with caution, as Satan is described in John 8:44 as “The father of all lies and there is no truth in him”. There is a possibility that you are being deceived by harmful powers. The last page of the Bible warns us in Revelation 22:15 that “Outside the City (of God) are those who practice magic”.

I have renounced my involvement with crop circles for a faith in Jesus which does not expose me to potentially harmful, unknown powers. I would like to pose the following question to the good people in the crop circle community who wish to become more involved: is it worth the risk?

CLIVE HARMSWORTH, Cardiff, Wales

SWIRLED NEWS REPLIES: There’s so much which could be said back to these ideas! However, as it involves delving into mysteries and controversies that theologians, agnostics and atheists have been struggling over without resolution for centuries, we’d best leave it, suffice to say that while no-one can say for sure that Ricardo and Clive are wrong, the overwhelming feeling most seem to receive from the crop circles is that they are essentially benevolent.
