DARREN FRANCIS on Silbury Hill and the latest research...
Re: Glickman's latest ramblings at 'the continuing silence' of English Heritage over Silbury Hill.
They're not being silent at all, really. Yes, the fences are still there, but that's hardly surprising given the research going on and the numbers of people who still try to scale the sides. They've recently opened a new museum at Avebury, which features an update (dated March 2003) on the latest Silbury research, including what to my mind are very significant findings about its internal structure and manufacture, amongst other things; it seems that instead of a 'step pyramid' structure, it was made as an eight-sided spiral, winding from the base to the top. Jolly interesting stuff, methinks. Have a look next time you're in the area.
