The shading on the blurred image of the disc (in 2002’s alien/disc formation) gives the impression of a sphere. Or a planet, or a pock-marked moon. Maybe, if it doesn't correlate with the side we can see of ours, it corresponds to the dark side (presumably not always dark), as well as containing the binary message. After all, he/she does seem to be winking...
